Just checking to see how many have done this and how well it has worked.

I took a t400 out of a jeep and could not see how you could get it to work. Well I guess you could run a chain the the rear axle........ But really how could this work in real life. I have heard of mopar trans but let face it mopar doesn't have the best reputation on autos. I know the reason we got the 7 was for the auto and just wondering how many think this is a do able option and long term option. I just don't see how financially this is a good swap. (new engine, new trans, adapters, shafts, etc)

Have you searched? Lots of info on this in the archives.

The most popular trans for CJs is the TH350. Check the Novak site. The TF904 and TF999 were offered in CJ-7s and CJ-8s after 1980. Nothing wrong with the Mopar transmissions - they are basically equal to the equivalent GM offerings.

I knew some people have done it, I looked at the older posts and could not tell if any body really like the set-up. I know we have all sorts of options for the 7 but 5 is short and did not know about drive-ability on long term. I.E. u-joints, shafts, bearings, etc. I know my wife would like the auto but I still don't think it is worth the time, money, and head ache. So basically just checking with you all.

Well, it depends on what you mean by worth the time and $$. Keeping Mama happy is one of my top priorities. My life is always better when she is happy! I have driven some CJ-5s with aftermarket auto trannys, and they worked well. None of them had the overdrive, so I can not tell you about that.

In my experiance the Mopar trannys are very strong, especially the 727. Of course I have only used them on a 426 Hemi, the Cummins turbo diesel, the 440 six pack, a 340 V8, a 318 V8, and last but not least the 225 slant six. I do not know if they would work with your Jeep engine. I do not know about the newer ones as I have no experiance with them.

I hope this helps, Matt W.
