I rebuilt my heads and have put about 20 minutes on the engine. It all sounds good with just a little sewing machine ticking. I lifted the valve covers to give a final check and it doesn't look like oil has been spewing all over like I expected. The assembly lube is gone but there seem to be areas including the valve covers that are still dry.

On Chevy V8's oil sprays all over under the covers.
On the Dauntless it looks like there has only been a little trickle going down to where the rockers hit the valves. There is definately some oil getting into the area because its pooling in the bottom of the heads but I expected a lot more lube up in that area.

How should the pushrods and rocker tips be getting lube?

I wondered about the same thing. But running a few years now and no problem. Looks like it is the construction.

not much gets up there, think the chevy has the better oiling system on the top end, on mine i did way back when, i had a steady flow @ the bottom of the head to the return hole in the back of the head, but was not impressed at all

I called Rocker Arm Specialists and he said you should see just a trickle. When you start seeing a lot of oil its because the rockers have worn the clearances on the shaft. Also you don't see much flow at all until 2k+ RPM.
Same from a local machine shop that does old engines. He said "those are scairy" because you think there is hardly any lube making its way up there but they seem ok.
It definately takes some rethinking from the hollow pushrod chebby setup but sounds like I should start driving.

A Buick motor or any motor with shaft mounted rockers isn't a small block chevy and slings oil every where. The lube system as far as the rockers goes is far supperior to a small bloxck Chevy's setup.

I used to run a solid-lifter cam setup in my 455 Buick and it just sort of slobbered oil around, not like any Chevy. As long as there is some oil up there you should be OK.
