I've done done a search and read a few comments that recommend removing the pad between the fuel tank and the skid plate. Is this the thing to do? I'm thinking of removing my skid plate to paint it and wonder if I should leave the pad out when I replace the plate. Also, should I expect the fuel tank to leak? I've heard that removing the pad may cause pinholes to appear. Should I just leave well enough alone? Please advise.

it's a known fact that the insulation can and will trap dirt/moisture which will rust the tank.
The tank might be leaking now, ever so slightly, and you haven't noticed.
The rest is up to you.

Mine's been out for over 30 years and I haven't had any problems.
