ok so i finally have my tcase back together and was wondering. i haven't rebuilt my od so i just bought a new mainshaft gear to reeplace it however it didn't come with a retaning nut. so to get to my question, do i need a special nut or is it something i can pick up at ipaco also is there any spacer that is needed or do just torque to spec? (M20 Muncie adapted to a D18) as always all help is appreciated.

I have a friend that had the exact same problem.I sent him to Six States Distributing as they specialize in trans and diff. parts. No luck ,they didn't have anything. So i'm thinking that is a special nut.Advance Adapter may have something.almost forgot, Herm might help you out.

the od has a barrel gear that is held in place by a cross shaped snap ring. the dana 18 uses a 1 1/4 or 1 5/16" nut.

If this is a converted transmission, then I'd expect the conversion mainshaft to use the normal Jeep bull gear nut. have you checked the usual suppliers for the Jeep part? Jeep PN 940970 - Google will show you at least a dozen sources for this part.

Well i went out and took a look at the nut and gear off my T-14.It is a 7/8" -18 thread per inch.It is a nylock nut that is .500" thick. Would take 1 1/4 " socket.Just an FYI of what I saw.Does anyone know if the T90 uses the same nut. That "barrel gear" is a sun and planetary gear that makes the O.D.the rest is just the alum. housing and shift fork.cheers !!!

I've run into two different nuts for the transfer case input gear. In general if the main shaft of the transmission has a hole in it for a cotter pin to keep the nut from backing off it's a finer thread and uses a castellated nut. If the main shaft does not have one then it is in general a coarser thread (possibly different diameter) and uses a nylock style nut. Both should be readily available from the usual suspects. Sorry but I don't remember off the top of my head the diameters or thread pitches.

I don't believe the t-90 nut will work. The t-14 is an odd size. Years ago I tried to find one at different places, ended up going to the Jeep dealership and paid close to $5.00 for it. This was around 25 years ago when they still carried some older Jeep parts.

There's a spacer behind the gear on the T-14 trans for sure. I would check with Herm to find out what you need.

It goes transmission rear output bearing, spacer, gear, washer, nut/cotterpin

There is also a locating ring that fits into a groove on the back of the transmission case to center the transfer case on the transmission.

ok i called AA today and they informed me that the spacer is not needed with their muncie m20 to Dana 18 adapter. So i swung by Novak and picked up the retaining nut and washer they said they don't get to many walk in customers :) but i got the jeep moving under it's own power i just need to cut a hole in the floor for the twin stick conversion put the front driveshaft in and bolt up the skid plate R)

Been a while since I ran a bull gear. I have to send my OD into Herm for some TLC, and while it's out I'm putting the stock gear back in place. I have the correct nylon insert nut, but I think I'm missing a washer and I can't remember which is correct. Does the washer inset into the bull gear?

This is what I took out, can't see what the washer looks like:

    yes
there is a thick, heavy washer that goes in between the gear and the nut.
