So i built this for a TJ but i guess the design could be adapted to anything. I used a short stick of 2x2x3/16 tubing, a 2 inch piece of 1 inch black iron pipe, and the stock tire carrier. i built it in the last two weeks of my shop period of school. I finished it today, my last class in there ever. The carrier itself is beef but with the tire is so heavy that it is bending my weak bumper. some plate will fix that.
    on ward with the pictures!!!

Looks good... still needs a latch and a pin to secure the rack to the pivot right? Plenty of room to mount a Hi-Lift jack to the inside.

yea, i havent figured out how i am going to do the latch yet. A trip through the local hardware store might give inspiration. i am going to cut a piece of telethon as a makeshift bushing/washer/spacer to go between the bumper and the carrier to make it swing a little nicer, right now i have to lift it over the receiver hitch. i intend to cross drill the pivot post right above the carrier and throw in a washer and a cotter pin like deal. any body have anything clever and easy for a latch besides welding a nut to the bumper and using a bolt to hold it shut?

Use a tractor draw pin (also known as a hitch pin). They come in several sizes.

Drill a hole through the end of the tire carrier AND the bumper. Drop in the pin and lock with a spring clip. It's not sexy but it's an easy fix and will work fine.

heres my idea i take a piece of scrap make it the same width as the carrier/bumper have it stand up vertically on the bumper at the end of the carrier with a 90 degree bend to the left at the same height as the top of the carrier then put another piece flat on the top of the carrier that will overlap the first piece, drill a hole trough them and put a pin with a clip through it

I'm a simple guy. ...forget the extra bracket in your picture. Buy a longer pin and drill the holes through the frame AND bumper. put the spring clip below the bumper. Less welding, less fabricating, ....

got it to the point where i can drive. I still want to put a pin in the pivot although its pretty set where it is. I want to weld a little bit of a rise so when it swing on to the bumper i dont have to lift it up on to the bumper.
