I have one of these and it works.

IS 30wt straight oil the right lubricant? anything is better than the cloudy junk that was in it, but I'd rather use the right stuff. I know it wouldn't 'call' for multi, being so old.

I removed it to dump the goop once called oil out of it and paint the bumper and such under the winch mounting plate, after discovering brake cleaner washed away the junk paint on this area while attemptign to clean it to respool new cable. Turned out well in the end to just remove it, service it, paint, and resassemble. Might as well do it right.

Someone put a huge bolt through the drive side frame rail through the steering box mount and double nutted it, which confused my impact gun........... :) I got the correct grade 8 zinced bits to fix all that nicely.

With the winch plate removed I can check the steering box oil as well, so that's cool! almost driving!!!!!!!!!!!

yes. 30wt is fine. That's what I run in my 8274 as per Warn's reccomendations.

I've heard that 20w-50 is acceptable too.

awesome thanks. I found reference to it before, but it was handwritten and scanned and wasn't certain. I want to get a light on my steering, I hope they didn't mess up the bracket way back. It was very tight.

I have also been using 30 wt Valvoline in my 8274 (68' vintage Warn)... glad to hear the info from other Owners of 8274's....... just recently upgraded to an 4.5 hp motor, new remote and line... This unit has never failed us in all these years!

Mine uses cable controls into the cab to run clutch brake and electrical switch. Are you using solenoids as actuators to the mechanical controls?? How is it remoted. Very curious.

This winch seems really strong. No reverse, but I don't mind.

Got the plate and bumper repainted last night and before work today, so almost back to reassembly up front.

THe newer 8274's use a 4 pack of solenoids for in/out controls. You might be able to upgrade to a new motor and solenoid pack ato gain the reverse capability, but you would still need the cables for the brake and clutch.

IMO, just run it with the cables.

Oh I see, so those have reverse and all. nice..... Yes I am leaving it alone, just painting the plate and bumper, getting fresh oil and cable on it and done.
