I am re-wiring my '74 CJ5 in the next week or so. At the same time, I plan to change my guages to aftermarket Autometer fuel, temp, oil pressure. At the same time, I figure why not change the speedometer while I am in there. The original doesn't work well (needle bouncing, getting stuck) and the replacement cable I bought I can't even get to slide all the way in. I have searchedon JF and online, but can't seem to find an Autometer mechanical guage that will fit where the stock one was. Has anyone added an aftermarket mechanical speedometer? If so, did it mount up in the original dash or did you have to make a plate to house it? Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Scott

A plate is easy enough to make if you have too. Just need a drill press and the apropriate size hole saw.

I used an appropriate sized can for a round template. I was going to get a hole saw but am to cheep to get one for one time use so I cut out the circle with a jig saw and bi-metal blade. Just drill a large enough hole for a starting point and cut it out.
