What are the repercussions of the alternator not being mounted evenly or to tight?

I know over time the belt will wear if it is cocked forward a little, but can the alternator be damaged if the pulley is off kilter(I'm talking by less than a 1/2 inch or so)?

Alternator quit charging, and I am curious if it is due to the mounting...

What is the likelyhood the battery is damaged and therefore not telling the alternator to charge?

Belt misalignment can cause bearing failure I'd guess, and definitely wear the belt, but it won't make the alternator quit charging. And no, a bad battery won't keep the alternator from trying to charge..

    Ben,

Did you ever get your meter working? Sounds like it's time to start tracking things down.

How did you end up wiring your alternator? As a 1-wire, or 3-wire?

meter is working...everything was running and charging fine with lights running bright, and seemed fixed...I was getting a 14 volt charge at battery with lights on.

I can jump car off and get it running, but there is no charge coming of positive of alternator

it is wired from positive of alternator to starter solenoid/ i purchased a specific resistor that goes to the 1 an 2 terminals from napa that plugs in and has a wire going to the positive/ I did ground the ground to the negative of the battery.

I havn't really done much in the past couple of days to it at all, and was throwing out some hypatheticals to get info before taking a closer look at things.

all I can really do right now is to pull the wiring back off, and double check everything as well as the mounting...

the simptoms were that it was charging the battery and I was getting a nice reading, and I would turn the headlights on, and the alternator would stop charging until I turned lights back off and still nothing and then I would kind of shake the alternator on its bushing(doesn't really move, but kind of jiggles) and it would start charging again. That is why the mounting of the alternator became something that I was looking at.

Hmm. Although you say you did ground the ground to the battery negative, the symptom you describe sounds like possibly a bad ground. Did you run a wire from the ground post (not the mounting bolt) on the alternator to the battery?

When you turn the key on (engine not running), can you measure the voltage at pin 1 of the alternator?
