how hard is it to shorten full width axles?

Looking at a set of matching Dana60's, much to wide for the YJ but the price is right.

All you need is a fist full of money. If you aren't running big horse power (say 300 and up) and 38" or larger tires it's a waste of money and time IMHO. For starters, unless you are running BIG tires you loose a lot of clearance because the center sections are so big. But, people do it all the time. But hold on to your wallet!

    ahhh my wallet!

I found a matching pair with 4:10's for $200. that really the only reason I was interested. figured I would need to go to 35's to get any clearance. but if it will be expensive, forget it

It's not that big of a deal, I have done it myself. The biggest cost is if you need to replace the shafts because they are necked. If they are non-necked can have them resplined. There is a ton of information on Pirate regarding the shafts. If you decide not to pursue the Dana 60's I'd be happy to pick up a set.

I looked at narrowing a 60-2 for the rear of the cj. I wanted to get it to WT width, the best price I found was 150 per side including resplining the shafts, assuming they were non necked. Really a pretty good price, but that just gets you a narrow axle with no gears or brakes.

Fronts are even more expensive to narrow. Next time you park near an older f350 or straight axle chevy 3500 look at the size of those axles. You definitely need 36"s or more for decent clearance.

For a yj, the 8.8 or waggy 44's is the way to go.

been calling around for an 8.8 in 4.11 +Limited Slip and a 4cyl YJ Dana 30 with 4:10. had a 8.8 on the hook with 3.55s but will be much easier to get the 4.11's

I did my d44 front about 8 years ago. I did all the grunt work ie grind, cut, hammer knuckles back on and my BIL welded it back together for me. Not all that difficult really. Back then I had 100 into the complete axle from a j10, 100 plus shipping for the axles cut and resplined from Moser( great to work with BTW). I recently purchased new tie rod from Parts Mike. Off hand I don't remeber the cost seems like it was around 130 for the set-up. I bought new bearings seals u joints calipers discs the whole shooting match. I think when it was all said and done I have around 600 into.

I have never done a rear axle.

BTW 200 for a set of d60's is CHEAP. The fronts alone sround here go for 600-1000 a piece!

    Good luck.
