I will be cutting some welds off for the first time this weekend. Looking for tips...

A 3/4" thick plate about 4'' by 6'' is currently welded flat to my rear crossmember (about 3/16" thick) Its a bolt on D-ring mount welded in place on all 4 sides. I need to cut it off this weekend.

Will my 3" cut off wheel work?

My first time cutting welds and am concerned I will accidently get into the cross member.

Yes, just have a good supply of cutoff wheels available. Be carefull and take your time. You can repair small cuts in the cross meember with a welder. IIt may be better to cut the metal of the d-ring adaper and then grind the welds flat then try to cut through the welds.
