I have a question about D44 axles. Can 30 spline side gears be installed in a 19 spline carrier?

    Thanks

should be no problem, just the different spline count.

30 spline side gears can be installed in a 19 spline POWERLOCK case and vice verse. If you are talking an open differential, no. The side gear journal diameters are different. 30 and 27 spline 44 side gears fit one case, 10 and 19 spline fit another case. The carrier bearings are different as well.

    I didn't know 27 spline D44's.

So I guess you can't install a lock-rite or Aussie Locker to convert a 10/19 spline open carrier to a 30 spline then? This is what I had in mind when I buy some of Herms full floating axles in 30 spline to swap into my 10 spline 2 piece axle. I assumed that the open diffs were the same and I could just pull out the side gears and install a lunchbox locker to convert. What are the options then for converting to 30 spline axles? Can you buy a complete differential or locker (say Detroit true-trac or Detroit locker) for 30 spline axles and install it in the old 10/19 spline axle with the right bearings and such?

Yes but you have to convert to 30 spline axles. If you're going full float anyway then that's the way I'd go. Stronger and much more locker/limited slip choices.
The housing will accept either, it doesn't care. It's the differential case that is different. If you go with 30 spline you will need the carrier bearings for a 30 spline case.

I used the FF kit on my 2 piece - didn't like the Detroit that came with the setup so went with OX. The only quirk with the OX was the cover needed a 1/16 spacer (depth was different from the newer diffs I guess). I cut an old diff cover and made my spacer - works great.
