I have a 67 cj-5 tuxedo w/ no winch and a mid 60's wagoner with a Ramsey 8000 lbs winch, pto driven. Will it fit on the cj or will it need to be modified to fit. Also it an 8000 lb winch to much for the cj. Will this cause damage to the jeep, or is there precautions i should us with this much pulling power. I am usally the suport vehicle not the wheeler as most of my vehicles normally weight in at 7800 or more. Any ideas, sugstions or thoughts?:?

I also have a 67 cj-5 Tux but mine has a Ramsey copy (a Rhino) 8000 lb PTO winch on the front. Most of the winches installed on cj-5s back in the late 60s were the 8000 lb models.

As far as will it fit? I'm not the guy to ask. It seems to me that the Wagoner had the pto shaft going down the right hand (passenger) side, and the cj-5 was on the drivers side. I can attest that my shaft is on the drivers side. I seem to remember that some winches were mirror images of others.

If the shaft is on the correct side, you are half there. The ptos are completely different between the two vehicles, if I remember correctly. If your cj-5 doesn't have a pto, I understand they are getting hard to find.

If your wanting to winch an almost 8k vehicle with an 8k winch forget about it. It will not be enough. Even with a snatch block you will be over working it and the Jeep.

8K? early cj5 is about 2200 lbs. 8K PTO will pull like a SOB. It should be perfect. Howard even made up drawings for the mounting brackest for a ealy cj5 with a ramsey PTO winch.

Thanks for the help and links. The winch is primarly for me but will help others in or out of the group with the miss fotune of getting stuck. I go out alone from time to time or wonder off, have't been stuck yet but it is a matter of time (It's not if but when). I check the wagoner and it is left side (drivers side). Sound like it could be a little project to switch over.

You will need a different PTO for your CJ. The Wagoneer has a Dana 20 transfer case, and the PTO for these comes off the bottom of the case, where the pan bolts on. Nearly 100% certain that the Dana 20 PTO will not bolt on to a Dana 18, both because of the shape and because of the different pitch of the gears.

However, I think the basic winch is the same for all models. The differences will be in the PTO, the mounting, and the driveshaft length and routing from the PTO to the winch. To use this, you'll have to buy the proper PTO and make or find all the other parts.

timgr is correct it is a Dana 20 w/ the pto out the bottom of the t-case. The winch does mount to the front of the jeep. the pto shafts can be ajusted to work on the CJ. Is it possable to mount a PTO off of a Dana 20 bolt onto the bottom of a Dana 18 t-case. The cases look the same some what. If it is possable do i half to change any gears in the pto for it to fit.

do you have an overdrive? Id say sell the dana 20 pto and get a proper 18 unit. Heck you may even make some money
