What size of nylon hose will fit on the oil sending unit ?

    i have a 52 m38a1 but i think any early cj5 sending unit will do.


    Also where can i get a new mechanical sending unit?

    There's no sending unit as such. The oil simply goes through the tube and moves the gauge.

    I'd guess you can use the installation kit from Stewart-Warner or the generic one from AutoZone. It's a bunch of fittings and adpaters, plus the length of tubing.

    Don't use the plastic tubing- you'll get dirty oil on the "carpet" in your A1 when the tube is chafed thru . Actually it's the hot oil you don't want. Use 1/8" copper or steel tubing.

    AS I recall, the M38A1 did use metal tubing of some type. Jim warns against copper, because it will work-harden and crack. I have used the nylon tubing with 100% reliability, but I put the entire length inside 5/32" vacuum line to protect it from abrasion.

    Here are some quotes from another recent post on this subject:

    Many of us run the nylon line with no problems. (I like Tim's idea using vac hose as sheathing). My rig has had the nylon on since 1995 or so with no problems.
    Many guys also run copper line with no problems.
    I have a length of copper to use as back up if my nylon develops an issue. :rofl:

    I have seen the nylon melt and the copper flex and break.

    Steel is a good idea, but may be hard to find in the correct size/length...
