My t 90 had caulk covering the rear shift rail holes from the previous owner. In a rebuild and removed the caulk, now I've been looking for caps to fit these to no avail, then was told they were left open from the factory without any caps. Is this true? and if so, doesn't the tranny leak from here?

It most definitely can leak there. Some had caps, some didn't. The ones that had caps also had a groove in the shift rail to allow any oil trapped between the end of the shift rail and the cap to escape back into the transmission instead of hydraulically forcing the cap out of the bore. If you put the caps on, you most likely will need to disassemble the top and add this groove to your shift rails. There was a post on this a couple of years ago, may be in the archives somewhere so a search may turn something up. Someone here had done this modification to minimize/eliminate leaks.
