torque converter

    anyone ever have a t/c go bad and what were the symptoms when it did. I just dropped the trany in my 85 auto 3 speed the flywheel has cracks all over but before I just replace that Im trying to see if the T/C is ok. any suggestions thanx cw

    There wasn't that much that went wrong with the non lockup converters, I have seen a few broken sprags in torqueflights and THM400s over the years. If the sprag breaks and the stator is able to freewheel in both directions then the vehicle will not have any power from a stop (it will feel like you are pulling a trailer) but when you get up to cruising speed it will feel almost normal, and if the sprag is siezed you won't be able to rev the engine very high in park or neutral. If the bearings or thrust washers fail then they will make some noise and there will be metal in the fluid.
