I just got my first jeep! It has a 3 speed with a warn overdrive. I can shift the gears fine, but cant find the transfer case gears very good. It seems that I have no low 4x4. top is high something mid is neutral and back is high something. also can I shift this overdrive while on the go? It says all range overdrive and seems to work in all gears even reverse. Also It has a ramsey pto winch on the front which seems to work good. any tips for using it? 90 weight oil in winch or? Thank you anyone D.

Sounds like you have a single stick Dana 18. Shift pattern should look something like this:

    Overdrive pattern is this:

On a dana 18: all the way up is 2H, next position going to rear is 4H, after that is neutral, THEN 4L.

    On a dana 20: 4H, 2H, N, 4L (If I remember right)

He's got a Warn Overdrive, so its gotta be a Dana 18.

On my old 68 CJ6, the transfercase was hard to tell what position was correct, like it had a warn out dentent. It was taken care of with a rebuild. If yours has the same problem, I recommend trying to shift it slowly until it engages. My 4 Low was alway hard to find.

Yes, the all-range overdrive works in all gears, even reverse. You can shift the OD on the fly, just like shifting the tranny: depress clutch pedal, shift, release clutch pedal :)
Now the tcase is different, you need to be stopped to shift that (or sometimes just slightly rolling forward).
It can be difficult sometimes to shift OUT of 4wd and back to 2wd. Sometimes you may have to back up about 6 feet to release the driveline bind before you can shift out of 4wd.

check the shift rods, sounds like a broken pin on the high/low shaft.

spray wd-40 (or equiv) on the shift rods as mine WILL rust in place over the winter building season.

what engine do you have?? might it be a twin sitck case missing a lever guys? high neutral high sounds like it's the 4wd lever. i know the levers pivot on the same shaft, but it might be missing. the single stick will have a big sort of C bent in it, and the twin sticks will look like a "normal" shifter.

orangeaid: Pictures would REALLY help. Particularly of the shifter in the up position, middle, and down so we can see what you mean. Once we see it, advising would/should be a cinch. Do you have a digicam and means to post 'em? (see our "help" section for posting pics).
