My original T90 case has been cracked and braized so I got a new (to me) one, so I thought. I have the Dauntless V6 and upon further inspection I have found that the one I had sent to me is not the one I took out. Looking at Novak's website I am finding that there are a couple of different models. What would the correct T90 be mated with a V6? The T90J maybe? Any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    :v6:

    Correct?

There is no correct T90 for a V6. T86 or T14 are correct.

Is your V6 a conversion or factory?

Factory for you would be a T86.

Yep, my V6 is stock according to SN. I have not yet cleaned off the oil and gunk from the case itself, but the top cover says T90 on it. I will take some pics tonight and post.

    Thanks,

T86s often say "T90" on the case.

It's likely that you have a T-86 and only the shift top says T-90. The T-86 is similar to the T-90, and likely uses the same shift top casting as a T-90.

The T-86 case can use the gears from a T-90, but you have to replace all the gears with T-90 gears - you cannot mix T-90 gears with T-86 gears. The T-90 and T-86 cases are not interchangeable.

Unless it really bothered me, or there was something structurally wrong with the repaired T-86 case, I'd just use it as is. T-86s aren't that common on the used market.

Looking even further into it, I am almost positive that I have a T-86 due to the fact that my setup uses a factory adapter between the tranny and the bellhousing. the repair seems solid, but since I have the jeep all the way torn down I think I will try to find a used case before reassembly. Are there any donwfalls with this tranny comapred with the T-90?

    Thanks,

Is it possible to use the T-90 in the T-86s place? Any advantages? The reason I ask is that I was able to obtain a great used T-90 case that I could use. I am thinking, if possibe, to put the T-86 internals (I already have a Novak T-90 rebuild kit) in the T-90 case and bolt the T-90 up to the adapter. I assume my large bore D18 would work with the T90 as well. Any ideas?:?

Lack of parts, I think. They are basically the same in strength and function.

2nd question - you need the long input shaft for the T-90 to use it with the V6. I'm not sure if that's compatible with the factory adapter though ... might be. The T-90 has a different bolt pattern from the T-86, so you also need to have some way to bolt it up to the existing adapter, either by redrilling the adapter or??

The usual swap to the T-90 takes all the T-90 gears and puts them in the T-86 case. That does not help you though...

Probably would be easiest to look for a GM-to-T-90 adapter on the used market. They come up quite often.

If I were in your position, I'd look to upgrade rather than to downgrade to the T-90. The T-14 supposedly will bolt up in place of the T-86, is more plentiful on the used market, and will give you a synchromesh 1st gear. Personally I prefer the T-15 instead of the T-14, but it isn't so easy a swap-in. It's been done, but I don't know the details.

    hth!

Was able to find a good used T-86 and can exchange my T-90 for it. I think I'll just stick with the T-86 then. Now I just need to buy the proper rebuild kit then. Thanks for all of the info.
