How do i check the timing chain for looseness without tearing the motor front off?? I know it seems like my timing chains at will, jsut want to check it before i have to tear it apart.

Had the same question years ago on the first V6 Buick I had in a jeep. A mechanic I knew at the time handed me a sthetascope and told me to put on the front cover and listen. Sure enough I could here it slap the cover., it was time for a new one. Don't know if that will help you though if yours isn't badly stretched

Dan you could probably do it by removing the fuel pump and using a small wooden dowel rod along with a flashlight and small adjustable mirror.

I've always done it by taking off the dist cap and turning the crank with a socket and check to see when the rotor moves. Too much slop will be evident. A little is OK. Don't have any specs on how much is too much though. Prolly the best way is to put it a TDC and see how many degrees you have to turn to move the rotor.
