Front Disk brake question

    Hey guys,
I may have the opportunity to upgrade my axles to Scout 44's with front disks and rear drums with a Detroit tru trac in it with 4.10's front and rear.

My question is about the brakes. With front disks, do I need to upgrade the master cylinder. It's a manual stock master, fairly new. If the answer is yes, what should I upgrade to on a budget??????

    Thanks

You should change over to a disc brake master cylinder and you won't be happy with manual disc brakes. There are ways to convert your present master cylinder to disc but I wouldn't take the chance. I converted to disc brakes with a manual master cylinder and the pedal pressure to stop was excessive and the braking power poor. I then switch to over to a power booster and it makes all the difference in the world.

I don't agree, I have manual front disc. and rear drums on a ton and quarter military truck. It stops Great. Hardly any pedal. I will be doing something similiar in my cj6.

we just covered this. Look at my thread about disk conversion. http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=62471

Short answer. You can retain the stock master, but you need to remove the 10# residual pressure valve, and plumb and inline 2# valve. JP magazine has a writeup with pics on how to do this.
