    Got a question for ya

I'm trying to get the shifter housing off of the transfer case housing. I got it to slide out so the gear was off the shaft, the left shifter rod came out, but the right rod didn't want to come out of the transfer case housing. Any secret mumblings I forgot to do to get it to slide out? Or is there some bolt I need to take out to let it come off?

Need to ship it so I need to make it smaller so it fits in the box.

I wanted to leave the rods in the shifter housing. The one came out of the transfercase, but the other one won't budge. I'll take a look at that link lynn.
    Thanks.

Well, Didn't really find what I was looking for there.

Guess I should say this is not a D18 or spicer 18.

    Ford GPW transfer case.
Don't know how much of a difference that makes??

    Going out to try agian...

Well, I put it back together. I'm guessin that that rod is attached somehow to the gears inside. I don't want to take this thing apart anymore than I have to.(read, I don't want to break anything on it since I've cashed the guys check;) ) I ended up tilting it on a angle in the box and got the levers to clear so they fit.

I think this is what you were looking for.
"D14. Remove the spring caps from each side of the transfer-case shifter and remove the springs and poppet balls. Some of these spring caps have a very short head and can be difficult to get a socket to grab hold of. You can make the job easier by grinding down the 1/16" shoulder on the front face of the socket. This will allow the socket sides to grab fully on the cap.

D15. Shift the front wheel drive shift lever shaft into the engaged position. That will be all the way forward.

D16. Remove the front bearing cap:

D16a. Remove the lock-wire from the five bolts

D16b. Remove the bolts holding the front bearing cap in place.

D16c. Remove the entire assemble as a unit. Note: The High/Low shift rod will stay in the main case. "

I think it is attached inside to the gearing with a fork if I remember right.

On the sides you will see a hex head plug.......take that off carefully and remove the spring......after that is the detent.......then it will all come off........ Only one rod will come off with the housing.

From the picture you supplied -it's the shift levers keeping the front housing from being removed. remove the shifter pivot pin and shift levers and the front will come off in your hand.

Too little too late; but it's either a Brown-Lipe or Spicer. Back then Spicer was building these under some sort of agreement with Brown-Lipe, who apparently designed them. They must have eventually sold the rights to Spicer becasue the B-L tag eventually disappeared in the mid '40's. I have both in my MB & GPW's & cannot find any differences beteen them besides the brand. I can't remember but Ford may have also built some, with F marked components, but still built to the same exact spec with all parts interchangable between the other brands. As stated earlier, all you needed to do was pull the pivot pin from the levers & it probably would have fit in the box. Oh well.

I know I'm too late. But for future reference, the reason the other shift rod won't come out of the case (which i ***-U-ME was your intention) is it has the shift fork for HI/LOW attached to it via a set screw. To remove - remove bottom pan, cut safety wire (if present), loosen set screw, slide rod from fork and case.

Yep, it is the ford gpw transfer case.

I wanted to pull the shifters off, but didn't want to knock the pin out for it. This was in good shape, and the guy paid $200 for it.

REALLY didn't want to break it.. ;)

I was able to prop it up at an angle in the box and just stuffed it full of syrofoam blocks and newspaper. Actually worked pretty good. I had it up on end and sideways, and it didn't even shift at all.

All the advise will be remembered though. I would like to eventually like to put a dual shifter in achilles if I keep him. I'm sure I'll need to know this later.
