I acquired a siezed 401 AMC for a few bucks and pulled the crank to check for grinds. Normally, I'm a chevy guy, and am used to grinds stamped on the bearings. I have a slight mystery with these, but it has been 4 years since I've had to crack open a motor. I need some help if any of you can interpret.

    On the rod bearing -
    Clevite 77
    10 82 030
    CB819P

Is this 10 or 30 under? I've never heard of 30 under....Does Clevite have a search function? I guess I'll check...

    --------------------------
    On the main
    13311-HDA

    Is this STD?

No clue about the bearing codes... but the 401 crank and rods are worth having. You can build a 304 or 360 stroker, a 325 or 385 at std bore.

You don't want them? I'll take them :D

You can make a 325 out of a 304 using that crank?

Yep. 325 cid at std bore, 336 cid at 60 over. The main journals are the same 304-360-401, but the 401 rod journals are different. You need 401 rods and custom pistons. Not cheap - maybe no cheaper than finding a core 401 - but it's been done.

In what way are is the engine seized? Depending on whats frozen up it might be a salvagable engine. I had a buddy in high school with a '69 Charger. He was given a "blown" 440, turned out the bearings seized. Tore it all down and built a very strong motor for a minimal outlay of cash.

Heck, if I had a 401 that was all frozen up, I'd figure out a way to get it running again. Even if I had to beat the stuck pistons out with a sledge hammer and have it bored.

I've been looking for a 401 for a year or so now. thought I had one and it was sold out from under me...........

This one had two blown cylinders, but I got lucky and found a second that just need bore and milled heads.
