I have a guy who has a 304 V8 out of 1986 Jeep renegade. My Question is : Will this engine directly swap with my 1974 304 V8 and mount to my 3spd manual tranny and are there any major differences between the '86 motor and the '74 that I should be aware of. Not sure exactly what year Jeep transformed from AMC to Chrysler. I just know mine is an AMC. Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated.

Note: My '74 is bone stock factory except for Holley Carb(2bbl)

    Thanks-- "The DOC"

    Yes.

    No.

There are some trivial differences, like some of the accessory bolt holes may be different, and some of the manifold bolts may be a different size. I beleive it will also have a newer style carburetor (2150 v. the '74's 2100) and some different smog devices. From a practical viewpoint, the same. Easy swap.

I thought Jeep stopped putting the 304 in CJs around '81-ish? You sure it is in fact a 304/360?

I found it for sale locally and talked to the guy(kid) sounds early 20's at the oldest. He parted out the jeep that he bought as a project and it was too much work for him and now he's onto an el camino. Are there any ID codes on engine to signify actual engine size and year of manufacture? I'm truly looking for an engine to rebuild while I still drive the jeep with its current engine, as most of you know by the post I have written over the last 6-8 months the jeeps current engine has nickle and dimed me so much that it has slowed my restoration back to clean condition. Luckily I only have minor body work almost none but suspension, steering, engine and bringing it back to close to factory as possible. I also have not felt confidence enough in the ability of the jeep to run properly to go off road or further than about 10 miles from home. A JEEP is meant to be free. Thanks for any help and advice you guys can give .:flag:

Engine size 304/360/401 will be stamped on the side of the engine under the motor mount.

Yes, the displacement is on the driver's side, cast into the block in big letters.

The V8s have a tag on the valve cover with a coded engine build date and displacement. The code is year (a single number starting at 1 in 1977), month (01-12), engine type: "H", "N", "P", "Z" is 304, 360 2V, 360 4V, 401 respectively, and day (01-31). Thus 405H13 is 304, built May 13, 1980.
