My 85 cj has the 3 speed automatic tranny in it I believe its the 904, when I first got the jeep it made a tapping or knocking noise only when the tranny was in Park. Put it in Neitral it would go away as well as any drive gear. In the fall I noticed it started making the noise even in Neutral, now it makes it in any gear and has gotten considerably louder. It only does at low RPMs soon as you step on the gas it will go away and also it only does it when it starts to get warmed up. Do you think it might need the bands adjusted or could it be something with or even inside the torque converter. thanx CW

Could be something in the pump. Could be one of the ears cracked or broken where the torque converter engages the pumpl. More likely you have a cracked or broken flex plate. Real common with automatics. FWIW you should have a TF-999 which is just an AMC version of the 904.

Yep, sounds like a cracked flex plate to me.

don't rule out the exhaust pipe hitting the crossmember if the tranny mount is bad or bolts missing.
also the cat conv can come apart and make some real noise as well.
