So today I was rebuilding the yf carb on my 73 cj5. The mounting gasket (the one at the base) was all dry rotted and needed to be replaced. The gasket in the re-build kit was substantially thinner than the one that I pulled off. I've looked at several places, and all the gaskets are the same as the thin one that came in the rebuild kit. Should I get a thicker one made, or just use the thinner one I have?

The base gaskets can serve as both an insulator and spacer depending on application, I had a 74 waggy with a 258 and I replaced the old base gasket with the thinner one during a rebuild and everything was fine. No binding linkage or signs that the carb was absorbing to much heat from the manifold etc.

Just make sure all your linkage works without binding just in case the gasket was serving as a spacer in your case. It could be something simple as getting the stock airbox to clear the valve cover or prevent the manual choke from hitting something. In some cases the carb base is thinner and the lifter link linkage will hit the manifold just before full throttle.

I think I have hit a dead end. The thinner gasket won't work because the throttle linkage binds up. None of the local autoparts stores are being helpful, and I doubt any of them sell about 1/4 in gasket material. Any suggestions on what I should do from here?

Have you tried to see if its available as a separate component?, My local NAPA can order the base gaskets separately. Unitll you can obtain one there is a temporary soution.................believe it or not you can make a temporary spacer out of a piece of 1/4 inch plywood if you are careful cutting it out ( use a coping saw with a fine blade ) I have done this and it will work untill you can get a gasket. Just be careful and run it snug tight with nylock nuts when mounting the carb.

The other option would be to cut a series of 16 gauge metal spacers ( similar to a bearing preload shim ) the same as a gasket and assemble one yourself, Thin gasket - shim - thin gasket - shim etc until you get what you need, just make sure you get a thin gasket at both the carb base and manifold.

My home PC is down so I wont be able to return post untill tomorrow am from work.

Well I believe I've gotten it taken care of now. I had 3 custom made at a gasket shop not too far away. They used one of those computer/rotary cutter things. Talk about cool!

:) Glad you could find some gaskets without having to resort to temporary measrures or allot of time custom making a permanent solution
