Has anyone had problems with the fill tube cracking? 75 cj with 15 gal tank. I filled it up this morning and went hunting. After getting back to the jeep about 1:30, I noticed gas dripping from around the filler tube. Headed for home quick. I pulled the tank and sure enough the tank is cracked where the filler tube is attached to the tank. My son's 73 did the same thing. Is this common for the intermediates? Any recommended remidies to keep it from happening again? Thanks Walt

I personally have never had it happen. But there must be something to it if both yours and your kid's did the same thing.
I got a good tank in my shop if you need one.

Several years ago I replaced the fuel tank in my 72 because it had several rust holes. I purchased the fuel tank from an individual here in Houston who sells Jeep parts. When I went to pick the tank up he showed me an almost new fuel tank that was cracked at the filler neck. At both rear corners there is supposed to be a rubber bushing between the tank (which sits on top of the frame) and the frame, if they are deteriorated like mine were or you leave them out then the tank may sit too low in the frame causing the filler neck to contact the frame rail which can caused the tank to crack. The new tank that he showed me that was cracked had been installed without the bushings and you could see where the filler neck was contacting the frame. Lupe (the Jeep parts dealer) said that tank had only been installed for a few months. So make sure the filler neck is not contacting the frame rail.

Thanks guys. Neither one of ours has any rubber bushings. I'll get some to put in there.

Thanks for the offer mcgillacuddy. I'll flush out this tank and have it fixed, it's not in bad shape.

    Thanks again
    Walt

Mine seperated wkere the neck attached to the tank body, the replacement tank took a lot of fitting and grinding to male it work, the flange where the 2 halves are welded together are a lot wider and the excess flang had to be ground-cut to get the tank to fit.
