I have a 61 cj5 with generator and would like to bypass the voltage regulator to test to make sure that the generator is working correctly. I have three wires on the top of the generator and I know one goes to the starter. Which of the other two wires is a field wire that I can connect straight to the battery to test to see if it will charge?

    Pics?

    Thanks

Actually, you need to connect the field terminal to ground, this will force the genny to full output voltage so you don't want to run it that way very long.

No wire should go to the starter, they should all go to the regulator, one wire is the "armature" or "A" which is the genny output/regulator input , the field wire, as you stated, controls the genny's output & there's a ground wire to make sure the regulator "sees" the same ground potential as the genny does, without this the charging voltage may do funny things. There's a forth wire on the regulator, that goes to the battery although for sake of simplified wiring it may go to the battery terminal of the starter solenoid.

If you clean the crud off the genny you'll find the terminals are marked for what's what.

I *think* the green in the above pic is the field, that matches with the wiring diagram in the tech section.

While you are going about cleaning the crud off, locate the two (should be) oil caps for the bearings and put some oil in them.

From the looks of this genny, that hasn't been done in a while. One at each endcap.

I couldn't find the labeling on the genny. I do think that the green is the field. When you say that I should connect the field to the ground, do you mean to the ground of the genny, or ground in general?

Hopefully the genny ground & in-general ground are functionally equivalent :)

    Anywhere should work.

The reason they tie the genny & VR grounds together is that smetimes the regulator, which are held to the firewall with sheet metal screws, vibrate loose giving them an iffy ground connection through their base, that blue wire eliminates that problem.
