Speedo/gauge wiring ID?

    I'm installing a 21 circuit EZ Wire kit in my '61 and am to the point of connecting wires to the lights/gauges on the speedometer. I didn't pay attention to what the wires on the lampholder for the "AMP" and "OIL" light are connected to when I cut them loose - the ones connected to the outer terminal on the back of the lampholder. I'm assuming they are both ground wires (see pic), but I'd feel better knowing before I connect power for the first time.

    On the double grey -- One wire goes to alt and the other will go to ign sw that is hot when "ON" only. The double purple has one wire going to the oil sender and the other wire going to ign sw hot when "ON" only. The sender/oil does the switching to ground to turn on the light. On my jeep the purple wires are in the charging circuit and the greys for oil, but it will still work either way. HTH The grey wire to alt goes on to the AUX term if you are using the Motorola alt.

    The extras don't go to ground, if those bulbs needed a ground they'd use the same type of sockets as the other lights there. The oil & genny bulbs need juice on one side from the ignition switch and connection to the oil switch & genny/alternator on the other just as Walt described.

    Thanks Walt and Howard. This whole wiring project had me kind of spooked since the beginning :rofl:. It'll be over soon (I hope) - gonna try to finish up this coming weekend. I owe you both. :beer:

    Is the fuel gauge correct? Also, does anyone have a diagram at the (under seat) tank?

    Fuel gauge is correct - not sure what you mean by a diagram at the tank. The one wire marked fuel gauge goes directly to the sending unit - no other wires connect there. I believe the fuel gauge measures resistance at the sending unit to indicate empty~full - wouldn't swear to it though. :rofl:

    He might mean diagram because he has more than one fuel tank wire. I have two wires.

    My second wire is a ground running from the ring of screws to a seat mount bolt on the door sill. And I have the white wire from the pickup.

    I have a Question in the speedo wiring. 12V to the center post of the fuel and alt gauges. I wired it that way but I have a problem with the fuel gauge it reads 1/2 full when the tank is empty and the key on? When the key is off the gauge reads empty with a empty tank. I did not use the alt side of the gauges as I have a volt meter in a gauge set that is not part of the speedo set. My question is do you have to have both sides wire to there sending units to share the voltage. And would explan the high reading on the fuel gauge? These are both new gauges and sending unit in the tank.

    Look again at the pic. The 12v from the "IGN" post at the ignition switch connects to the outer ring (the one I mis-labeled as a ground) and the wire to the center of the lamp housing goes to the sending unit. Howard, Walt or timgr can better answer as to why the gauge isn't reading right - possibly because it's not reading resistance. I think I remember reading a thread explaining where and what the readings should be at various points, but I'm not sure. With the key off, there is no voltage so therefore, no reading.
