Has anyone used one of the cheap generic ATV radio remote controls, as seen on eBay, to control a Warn 8274 or such winch? Seems easy, in my aledged mind, to hack it to plug into the 8274 4-pin trailer connector.

It can be done. (I am a Warn repair Tech), but there will be some delay in response from the transmitter to the winch - not a big deal with a slower winch, but with the 8274 it will be a bit of an issue.
There will be a green wire, white wire and a black wire inside the solenoid cover, going to the remote plug. the white wire is constant 12 volts, so you should tie in with a fuse to go to the wireless remote reciever - then there should be 2 wires from the reciever that you will tie in to the black and green wires - these signal the in and out functions and trigger the solenoids.
I would solder the connections and heat-shrink them when you are done.
    Hope this helps.
Oh, if you have a newer winch with the 5 wire controller, this system will not work unless you wire in a ground bypass circuit and defeat the safety feature of the solenoid pack (I would just buy the correct remote thru Warn - part#76080) it is set up to plug directly into any 5 or 6 wire warn remote plug, so no wiring required.

Thanks for the great detailed info! I thought it ought to be that easy ... but usually miss thinking about a really important piece to a puzzle.

Couldn't stomach the ~$40+ price on eBay for an official ATV wireless remote. Found this unit for $20 delivered. Now on to figgering out how to make it work ;)

You got me dude, but you will need to figure out 2 output terminals and one 12v input on the reciever, then just wire it in-line with the remote plug.

on pirate4x4 there is a great 8274 wiring diagram. Also on warn's website there is the installation and instruction manual in pdf form with wiring diagram. The 8274 is really easy to rewire and troubleshoot if you under stand how a series wound motor works.

The controller actually sees very little amperage so I dont see why your remote wouldnt work.

Thanks guys. I'm pretty much ok on the winch and wired controller wiring ... just need to dig into the wireless unit. There's a manual online for it but it has contradictions. There's jumpers to control whether the unit performs in toggle, momentary or latched modes, then there's multiple output terminals depending if you want your circuit to be normally open or normally closed ... just ran out of time last night. :)

I would definately run it in the momentary mode, or you run the risk of damging the winch or yourself.

Yep, me too. But I need to determine which jumpers actually do what, disregarding the "manual". It wasn't a question, just commentary :)

Put the finishing touches on the wireless controller today :)

For $25, including 4-wire trailer connector) it's a handy little doodad (even handier on my dump trailer, but that wouldn't be an ecj5 "tech" subject). Interestingly, this remote unit has NO delay and works a LOT further away than the standard 12' wired remote :)

Yeh, it worked out as good as I had planned :) (stuff doesn't usually work that way with me)
The Radioshack project box I put it in just clips onto a sheetmetal screw I put on the outside of the solenoid box. So, I can keep it in the glove box when not in use and it also works on my 8274 that's on my ranch truck, and the dump trailer.
