I just took the cover off my rear diff to inspect the spider and side gears (close to shot locker coming soon) and was going to extend the vent up to the engine compartment but i cant find one. This is the 1962 D44.
I cant believe there is no vent or am i missing something?
    Thanks
    Mike

For what its worth the D44 under my 55 CJ does not have a vent that I can find, The front D25 does however.

I stand corrected, After seeing Howards post I went out and started scratching around in the general vicinity and sure enough there is a little hole there. I had to scratch down to bare metal to find it because it was completely plugged with paint and primer from some POs past paint job..........will have to get a tiny drill bit and clean it by hand.

    Thank you Mr Eisenhauer!

Yes it does, it's just plugged up with 50 year old dried up gear oil & covered over by rust & crud.R)

is that for real? if it is is that just a small hole or is it threaded. Does not look deep water friendly. Ill have to clean the tube and check that.
    Thanks.

Yup, fer real. Just a little itty-bitty hole. The military versions came with real vents but not the civvy's. I welded mine up with the intention of installing a hose\vent on the pumpkin.

I like your concept of moving the vent to the Pumpkin cover...............Added to list of good things to do.

Actually I'm going to drill & tap the casting itself, if I go to the cover I'll have to mess around with brazing & whatnot but in my case the casting is easy to do as the axle is currently out of Tonk & semi-somewhat diss-assembled anyhow.

But mostly because I just don't get to use that 1/4"NPT tap I bought last year enough anyhow.

Good point, When I remove the cover to install new gaskets I will have to see if it can be done then.
