I am allmost ready to install yj springs on my m38a1.
My question is if i have to widen the spring pads for the wider springs, or it's ok to leave them as it is?
I have seen photos on the internet where the spring pads are not as wide as the spring.

I would love to know this as well, so if anyone knows for sure, let us know. I know it is Advised to go to wider spring perches, but is it mandatory? will the edges of the spring perches cause slight stress risers on the springs if they are narrower than the springs?

I do not think it would hurt anything. I would just keep an eye on them for a while and make sure they (the u-bolts) stay tight. That would be my only concern.

I have done a lot of research on this for my '79 CJ5, although I have not yet decided to do it. YJ springs are 2.5" wide at all four corners. I have been advised that it is not necessary to upgrade your perches, but I would do so anyway for the piece of mind.

Actually i think the problem is not if it's going to get loosen but if the spring is going to brake because if your are on the trail that would be a problem

I don't think it will break.
You don't think it will loosen.
Sounds like you're in good shape!

Bolt them up and run them. I don't see any issues.

The way the stock spring pads are put on I doubt they are ever coming off!

I'd use the originals and watch as recommended . . .

I replaced mine in the SOA conversion . . . They were a bear to get off

I have had YJ springs on my Jeep for quite a few years. I did not widen the spring mounts; so far no springs broken or loose.

I used the little hole but I may move it depending on how it feels on the trail.

I doubt you can get another meaningful hole in the stock spring pads, however. It may be worth swapping pads but its a lot of work for 2-3 inches!
