This is the first pushrod OHV vehicle I have owned...up to this point i have always had OHC engines. Oil gets pumped up into the valve covers of a OHC engine to lubricate the camshafts, so when the engine is running, there is plenty of oil in there. When I take the oil cap off of the running engine on my Dauntless, I don't see much if any oil under the valve covers. Is this normal, or should there be a lot more oil under there? Thanks guys!

    It's a Buick, not a Chevy. :D

Oil pumps through the rocker arm shaft pedestals and then through the shaft. So no, it's not splashing and spraying everywhere under there.

So its alright that there isn't much oil under the valve covers? Right now it looks like i could run the engine without the valve covers on, and oil wouldn't leak out of the engine.. Sorry...first "old" vehicle...so I'm learning monkeys :)

We ran a Buick V6 often without valve covers in an engine rebuild class I took at a local vo-tech school a few years ago. Sparky is right; very little oil is apparent with the engine running.

There are OHV engines that splash a lot more oil around in the valvetrain than the Buick V-6, Chevy engines especially come to mind. In these engines oil is pushed up through the pushrods and then out through small holes in the tips of the rocker arms. This is OK at idle, but man what a mess this makes at speed!

low flow is normal, just make sure you do have a flow, if a oil passage is stoped up it will starve for oil, you should be able to look at the bottom of the head inside the valve cover and see some flow, but it wont be alot
