My '71 CJ5 has some neat headers on it to some crappy looking flexible exhaust piping that runs right along the rear tire and out the back. It looks WAY too close to the tire for me. What can I do to fix it? Someone suggested I put it out the sides behind the doors, but I'm afraid that may make it very loud. Is it worth the trouble of re-running the exhaust more carefully out the back? The corrugated pipe looks like it would kill the air flow, too... kind of defeats the purpose of the headers...

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Jay

I don't think you have a lot of options with fenderwell headers. If the mufflers were inside the frame, you could bring the pipes back and over the axle, and out the rear corners. With these headers, the pipes are already outside the frame. I think dumping the exhaust just ahead of the rear tires is the only realistic choice.

Noise will depend a lot on the mufflers you choose. That you have some control over. A good muffler shop should be able to fix you right up with mufflers and pipes - ask for a quiet muffler.

Supertraps are rather small and can be tuned to be quiet.

from the headers back looks home brew to me and it is too close in my opinion.

a good muffler shop can make the 90* bends that will go up and over the shock mount and run along the tub to exit the rear corners; that's always been the hardest part, those two tight bends needed.

The way your muffler is attached is killing your flow more than the tail pipe. It should slip OVER the collector, not inside.

I always hated those crappy gaskets on the collector flange... paper, even the metal-faced ones don't hold up. I eventually replaced that with Header Buddys... no more gasket problems.

I also installed 90* turn outs behind the muffler to exit in front of the back tire on my old '71. Not too loud; muffler choice makes the difference.

x3! My exhaust pipes huge the body up and over the shock mount and then dive down and parallel the frame to exit out the back. I can provide photos if you like. I have had no problem and can easily run tire chains without issue. I must mention, however, I do run 1.25" spacers in the rear to match the width of the front D30 and to keep my tires from rubing the inner wheelwell.
