Purchased my 16 year old son a 1972 CJ-5 earlier this spring so he could learn the ins and outs of "real" driving and vehicle maintenance. I want him to change the oil but I can't find out how much oil it needs. Sounds like a silly question but this "mom" has no idea.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Not knowing what motor you have is a problem......but what I do when I'm not certain is this.
Pour in 2 quarts of oil....wait 5 minutes (to let the oil settle) and check the dipstick.
If it needs more (and it should) pour in 1 quart at a time until you reach the proper level on the dipstick.

It should take between 4 to 6 quarts depending on the motor :)

Thank you. That was my intent. After I posted I realized I should have mentioned the engine size. It is a 258.

    Thank you, again.

6 quarts including 1 quart for the new filter.

We'd be happy to answer your son's questions directly, if he'd like to post here. He's welcome to hang out and discuss Jeeps too. This is a family board and we welcome members of all ages.

Thank you! I will let him know that. We are having so much fun with this thing. My husband was terribly excited about it until he found out he can't fit in it! He is 6'4" and with the new Corbeau seats being so narrow it just isn't comfortable. Son is 6'3" and a string bean so all is good! But...not to be outdone...he just purchased a new Wrangler Rubicon. Now we will have dueling Jeeps in the garage! Testosterone is flowing! What have I started?!
