Steering mount

New to this forum it looks like a lot of good info. My question is has anyone drawn up plans for a heavy duty steering box mount for a '75 CJ5? I busted mine last weekend up on Barrett Lake trail, I'm surprised it lasted this long. After market has lots to choose from for '76 and newer but nothing for '75 and older. It's starting to look like I'm going to have to build my own. Thanks

 

you don't necessarily need a heavy duty mount. What you are looking for is a steering box brace. I made my own, but dont have any pictures. There is one currently in productiion for the intermediates. I think its a rugged ridge or some other big parts brand.

 

A quick Google search will turn up options ranging from DIY-$80.

I'm running a brace but the mounts are only cast steel and tend to crack and it's a waste of time trying to weld them. This is the second stock one on this rig so it's time to build something stronger. I just sucked it down to the frame with the winch to finish the trail.

well, I know the later mounts are stamped, and are even weaker. If you are putting that much stress on your steering box, maybe you should consider a hydraulic assist set up.

I'm only running 35's but it still puts a lot of stress on the box and mount. I started building my own mount out of 3/8" plate today, I'll see how that works.

 

I think the reason for the aftermarket brackets was the change to stampings. If Jeep had stuck with castings there might never have been a market for an upgrade. If a casting cracks I'd suspect it worked loose first, but anything can be broken if one tries hard enough.

 

Well, 35's is alot of tire for a vehicle that was originally equipped for somewhere near 28"s!

I believe it's M.O.R.E (Mountain Off Road Enterprises) that build a super heavy duty mount. I know they make them for the '76 and up but may make one for the '72-'75. Just checked on their web site and they don't list one for the '72-'75 but they may offer one. I'd call them or order their catalog as they have lots of good stuff. They also have steering box stabilizers also.

 

I called M.O.R.E and they don't offer them for the 72-75 Jeeps, no one else seems to either.
