Warn/Saturn type OD. While doing fitup, I find the pilot bearing sleeve/collar on the bowl gear ***'y will not slip over the bearing that's on the casing ***'y shaft. Using calipers, the ID of the sleeve/collar is 1.7520", the OD of the bearing is 1.7535. That just doesn't seem right.

I have tapped lightly on the bowl gear and casing with a plastic hammer and it's not interested in moving.
Doesn't seem appropriate to use the mounting bolts to press it on ...
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated

Definitely don't try pressing it on with the bolts. Something isn't right there. Herm will have the answer for you. Is this a new unit?

Yeh, I've abandoned the install. I just thought there was somrthing I was missing. Normal for me ... nobody's heard of the prob  I'll get w/ Herm next week, bugged him enough this week getting my PTO sprocket and chain. It's a used unit. Thanks for replying.

Be sure to post your findings as this is a new one to me. I've installed Warn and Saturn OD's and have never run into the problem you mentioned.

Well, it's fer real ... just got off the phone with Herm: He says it happens QUITE OFTEN and, that that is why he specifically says in his "How to remove an overdrive" instructions that it can be difficult to pry the case off the TCase.

He says the prob is that over time the spider blank (aka planitary spider assy) deforms and, where it's collar fits over the needle bearing on the spline shaft, it locks itself onto the needle bearing. Specifically, he has found that the spider blank collar is no longer round but actually undulates in a circular pattern. He speculates that if one were to remove the case from the barrel gear and then put it back on in precisely the same alignment, it might fit, but it would be near impossible to do.

His solution is to machine the spider blank collar back to "round" during rebuild.

I made sure to specifically thank Herm for his time in answering my question which may or maynot lead to a rebuild job. He is a great resource.

What really puzzles me is that with just shy of 200 views of this thread, no one could answer the question or lead me to a search thread that I missed. With all the Jeep-specific gearheads on this site, I thought it would have been fairly easy. I guess it's been fun stumping the panel :)

I know I have been running and working on the Warn ODs since the late 70's early 80's and never seen that issue.

Guess that's why Herm is THE overdrive guy :)

I found it painfully interesting that he had to tell me that that is why he emphasised the possible difficulty of removing it in his "removal instructions". I was too stupid to identify the fact that difficult removal meant NOT being able to re-install it
