I have a 62 cj5 and need to rebuild the t18 transfer case. My question is can you tell if it has the 1 1/8" or 1 1/4" shaft with out removing the case. It has the F head T90 and dana 18. I want to order the kit before tearing it out.
    Thanks
    Mike

both ends of the shaft are exposed
you can measure one side or the other if you clean the t'case off real well

Yes, go under the jeep and measure the shaft. On mine (1 1/4) the shaft sticks out a bit on the rear.

And to minimize confusion, t18 is a transmission...

I would guess small hole 1 1/4 shaft because of 4 cyl. cj5. Can check on shaft to make sure though.

The large hole case was used behind the T-86 and T-14 transmissions used behind the V-6. The small hole was normally used behind the T-90.

You can use a Dana 20 case but make sure you get one with the fill plug on the side and not the back. Also make sure the drivers side of the case is machined, drilled, and tapped for the pivot for the clutch linkage. Some are, some aren't. Some have the fill plug on the back but if you have the drum parking brake on the transfer case you won't be able to access the fill plug. Also make sure you get the shift rail "plugs" with the case also or you will be looking for some.
