Thanks for your quite reply. I'm not having any luck with the auto parts stores either. The 71 CJ-5 was the first CJ to the gas tank between the frames at in rear. Because of this the muffler was moved to under the driver's seat and the tail pipe exited on that side also to be as far away from the gas tank filler pipe as possible. Currently, the auto parts store are searching for a muffler by the dimensions I've given them. My current muffler is an oval one. The body is 14" long and 91/4-1/2" wide. The front inlet is 2" and in the center. The rear outlet is also 2" on the left side look down from the top.

Bruce, I looked in the Walker online catalog and did not find any listing for a '71 with a V6. However, the '72 parts might work for the muffler and tailpipe. Certainly the shape of the tailpipe is about the same, and they spec a generic muffler in place of the 72-specific part. If you are friendly with your parts store, they might let you order them from the Walker warehouse and hold them up to your parts to see if they will work.

Here's the link: http://www.walkerexhaust.com/catalog/ExhaustCouponScreen.asp - You can navigate to the '72 page - muffler and tailpipe are the same for both V8 and I6.

<edit> Also, if you know of an old-time Mom&Pop parts store, they may have the old paper catalogs with the Walker or Maremont PNs for your parts. Sometimes these NLA parts sit on a warehouse shelf somewhere and remain in stock even though they've been deleted from the 'line.' Also possible (though I'd gues less likely) that the store can cross these numbers to another, lesser known manufacturer and find then that way.

Then finally, you can ask your local muffler shop to bend them for you. They will want to install the pipes and weld them in though.

Jeepin', That's a great suggest! The first thing I discovered was that muffler has 2" inlets and outlets. That's what I needed. The outlet is on the wrong side but All I have to do is rotate the muffler. The pipes maybe a wee short but I'm sure I can get whatever extension I need.
    Thanks!

Have yor tried Jeepagain.com? They are selling the inventory from Pioneer Garage in Peabody. I was up there several months ago and he had tons of exhaust pipes. Good luck.

I picked up a muffler and tail pipe for NAPA yesterday designed for the 72' CJ with the 304 V8 made by Walker. The tail pipe looks like a winner but the muffler is 2" longer then the one I currently have.
I can cut off some the front intermediate pipe and move the muffler forward. I can't go too far forward before the transfer case mounted emergency brake lever hits the front of the muffler. There isn't much, if anything, I can cut off of the tail pipe with out affecting the first bend where it joins the muffler.

I have some concerns as to whether the extra 2" of muffler with create too much back pressure for the V6 engine. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Pioneer Garage in Peabody Mass is looking for a muffler and tail pipe. So far they believe they have a muffler but no tail pipe. I think it would be possible to mate the 72' tail pipe to the shorter V6 muffler with an extension tube if necessary.

By the way, the muffler and tail pipe were really cheap: $36 and $32 total.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I'll continue to keep you posted. If this works it will solve the problems of exhaust components for all the 71' V6 owners out there.

Now if we could only find a hoard of V6 "Y" pipes some where!

from my view: it will be quieter, and you might have to readjust the carb.

Today I installed the 72' muffler and tail pipe for the 304 V8 motor in my 71' with the V6. Everything fit great. No modifications necessary except the shortening of the intermediate pipe to allow for the 2" longer muffler.

Thanks to timgr and everyone else who made suggestions.

Today I installed the muffler and tail pipe for a 72' with the 304 V8 in my 71' with the V6. It fit great. Even the tail pipe was able to snake between the frame rail and the rear tank without touching anything. The only modification was the shortening of the intermediate pipe by 2" to accommodate the longer muffler.

Thank you to TIMGR "Jeepin Nerd" for his excellent suggestion and to everyone else for your interest and suggestions.
