What parts are unique to the Intermediate CJ5's ?

Has anybody every seen a list detailing specifically what parts are unique to the intermediate cj's?

I had two 5's completely torn down (a '73 and a '78 and "combined" the parts to build one 5 over the past two weeks - 73 tube, frame, and axles, with 78 engine, tranny, transfer case, front brakes, and guages. I noticed a number of things that are obviously different, but wondering what I may have missed. Here is what I've got:

Differences in Intermediate CJ5's to '76 and on CJ5's:

    Frame - very different
Tub - Firewall area, *exterior appearance
HVAC - entire system, *including heater controls
    Gas pedal
    Master cylinder
Front Brakes - 78 had disc (optional starting in 76), not an option in Intermediate CJ5's (spindles and knucles are different because of this)
Front axle shafts - late model CJ5's do not taper in middle of shaft
Springs - late model springs are wider
Voltage Guage - late model is slightly larger diameter
Oil Pressure Guage - 73 is mechanical, 78 is electrical (changes in 76?)
Steering dampener - not existant in 73, there in 78 (there in 76?)
Hub - 73 is 6 bolt, 78 is 5 bolt *(bolts holding the locking mechanism on, not number of lugs)
Transfer case cross member - much larger in 76+
Gas tank - smaller filler hose in 76+
Rear axle - Dana 44 compared to the AMC 20
    Gas cap/filler appearance
    Clutch bellcrank length
Radiator - thinner in 78, same bolt locatation and hose sizes
Dash Panel - holes for voltage and oil pressure guage different sizes
    Steering column cover
    *Windshield frame
    *windshield hinges
    *Transmissions
*Tools box under passenger seat for 73 (72-75?)
    *Dashboard

Thats about all I can come up with off the top of my head, what else is missing?

    78 shouldn't have 5 lug hubs. IIRC 82+ have 5 lug.
Transfer case skid are unique compared to 76+
    Transmissions are different.
The body itself is slightly different.
    Tool box under passenger seat.
    Windshield hinges.

Updated the list, keep them coming - and mention what the change was

As a side note, questions marks in the list are things I am not sure of

Are you asking what parts are different between '73 and '78?

Fellas, you are looking at this totally backwards!

The parts that are the same are a much shorter list. The '72 model was an update of the '71 models using AMC engines and some obvious new features, like power steering - basically a stopgap. The '76 model was AMC's complete top-to-bottom makeover for the CJs.

    Here's what they kept:
    Engines, except for smog updates
Front axle, but not the brakes. Gear ratios are different.
Transfer case, but not the shift linkage.
    Tires and wheels
Exterior body shell mostly, except for some details like the bow pockets (gone for '76 on) and Jeep logo (but '78 is the same as late '74-75)
    Fenders, hood and grille
V8 alternator? (if still Motorola - it was still Motorola in 1977)
Radiators? I expect they are the same, but there was a heavy duty cooling option that could make them look different
    Steering gear

    Everything else was changed.

When was the first sealed tailgait introduced? How about roll bars, standard? Did later models have stock emmissions? Just guessing here.

Good point, I didn't realize how much was different until I started making a list. The list of what was kept the same is much shorter. :)

The solid back panel was available as part of the Renegade II package in 1970-71 (check the Ren page for a better timeline - I'm not that familiar with the pre-72 Rens). It was also available as part of the Renegade package in 1972. It entered the regular option list in 1973, and AFAIK was available as an option from then on.

The factory CJ-5 roll bar came along in 1974 or 1975, and was optional. The CJ-6 never had a factory roll bar. I'm not sure what year the CJ-5 and CJ-7 roll bars became standard, maybe in the late 70s. All factory roll bars were painted the body color.

I'm not sure what you mean by stock emissions. All Jeep models from the 60s on had some sort of emissions equipment. The required equipment changed according to the year of delivery, the model, the drivetrain, and where it was delivered (CA in particular). Note that there were some kind of changes for just about every year. Check the FSM for your year for a complete list of devices and which vehicles they applied to.

The M38A1 mostly did not have a tailgate, there are a few that did.

CJ-5s had tailgates from their inception in 1955. As Tim noted the Renegade II had a fixed tailpanel, ca. Nov. 1970 or so. From there on Tim knows more than I do. So listen to him on the availability.

Technically '40-'41. The first "Jeeps" didn't have tailgates. Neither did WW2 models except for some special built units. I know there were some Marine Corps and Navy M38a1's that had tailgates special ordered. Some were also ordered with 10 spline Dana 44 Powerlocks that the side gears are hard as hens teeth to find. I've held two sets in my hands and wished I'd kept them as they are worth about their weight in gold to a restorer.
