For those who have 4 wheel disc brakes like i do and wish you had a little more pedal, i lifted this from another board. he is using a 78 grand marquis master cylinder. i think i am going to go look at one tomorrow to see what it looks like and may get one to install it in the jeep.

" Has anyone on here ever swapped a Mercury Marque M/C into their YJ? I'm running 1/2 ton calipers in the front, and Eldorado calipers in the rear. My pedal leaves little to be desired. There could be some air in the system, but I'm also sure the stock brake system isn't up to the challenge of 35" tires and larger calipers. I searched POR and came up with either a '86 E350 M/C, or a '78 Mercury Marque M/C. They're both a 1 1/8" bore, but the Merc unit appears as though it will bolt right up in place of my stock on, other than needing a few adapters. It was also designed for use with 4wheel discs. It was used with a hydra boost system, but from what I can tell, that shouldn't matter at all. Anyone have an opinion on this? I will probably ditch the stock prop valve in favor for an adjustable one. "

That could be used. I am just throwing out the 78 marquis, it is something that would seem to be cheaper than say a vette or firebird.

not sure bout the throw. i found out you can get a pshrod now in NAPA auto in their "help" section in the store so if you need a bit more throw you can finally buy a new pushrod.

    Hey Dan,
A couple of months ago I picked up a master cylinder for a '68 Corvette from NAPA. I can get you the part number if needed (I'm upstairs and it's in the garage... call me lazy). I swear I only paid somthing like 28 bucks for the thing. It's designed for non-power 4 wheel discs and it will bolt up to the 72-75 CJ pedal assembly. I haven't tried it yet so I can't vouch for how well it works though...

Bringing this one back up from loooong ago...

I'm buying Dan's axles with the 4-wheel discs. I've been researching about what MC to use. I want to keep the "through-the-floor" pedals...

I've found (on the Napa site) that the Mercury Marquis MC is made for front and rear discs, and it has the line ports on the passenger side. This means it will work in the under-floor location like my stock unit. The only thing I'm unsure of is the fact that the MC is set up for hydraboost... Is it possible to use an MC without using that feature (I know nothing about it)?

I have the single version of this on Putt Putt. The side mounting provisions makes it easy to adapt to our frames. We put one on Jerry's Jeep last summer and it had killer stopping power with 11" front drums 8) It was so good that it made me go back and check out Putt Putt's shoes which were thin

napa sells the corvette non power rebuilt for about $26.00. this should bolt to the factory bracket and I know a few people that are running them and are happy with it. the problem with the stock master cylinder is the drum side doesn't push the fluid needed for the calipers.

The only problem with the Corvette MC is that the line ports are on the wrong side (drivers side). I checked it out at NapaOnline yesterday.

Maybe I'll give Herm a call...

Yup Corvette Cylinder is on the driver side outlet. The Jeep CJ discbrake is on the right side. I believe i got the 78 cj with 11 inch rear brakes. Oh an definately get the wilwood 2lb residual valve for the front and rear brakes, it really makes a difference in the brakes, i had to pump the brakes without one, after it was a one push deal.

So the late-model CJ MC has the ports on the passenger side? Did you remove the residual pressure valve from the rear (drum) port and plumb in the 2lb from Wilwood? I would have assumed the front would work fine b/c the MC is made for front discs (rather than plumbing in a 2lb there also)...

According to Dan - the '78 CJ master cylinder is set up for disc front, drum rear, and has the ports on the passenger side.

Let me make sure, i have the MC sitting in a box at home. Got it for other future projects. I didnt remove the rear residual valve, there was not one in there. I didnt install a rear residual valve. I in hind site think i should have. with my four wheel setup, i could stop on a dime with all wheel discs, but the pedal was still soft, i think if i added the residual valve i would have had better pressure since the rear wasnt fully engageing i believe. I had an adjustable proportion valve installed, but never tuned it to see if i could make it rock hard braking,

Hmmm - Maybe I'll try one of these MC's, with a 2lb RPV plumbed into the rear lines. That'll, at least, be a starting point.
