Carb replacement

    I'm afraid that my original Carter YF has finally gotten beyond the rebuild stage and that I am going to have to replace it. So far, I have found out that Holley does not make a replacement, but Solex and Weber do make replacements. I need input from people who have gone to replacement carbs....is one better than the other, what are the common problems encountered when doing this replacement, etc.?
    One other comment: recently I was in Argentina and down there, they often use a Holley 2bbl from Ford Falcons to replace the Carter YF but they have to fabricate the linkage to make the Holley work....I was not able to get any numbers off the Holley they used.
    Oh yeah, my Jeep is a '65 with 134 F-Head engine.

    Welcome to ECJ5. Stop by the "Introductions Forum" and tell us about yourself.
    As for the carb, I replaced my YF w/ a Solex type carb. No difficulties at all. It's an
    easy swap. Price wasn't bad either. Good luck!!

    Welcome from Boston! Where are you located? If you live outside of the rust belt, you should be able to find several different USA 1V carburetors at your local pick-your-part. The Holley 1V and Autolite 1100 are a couple of possibilities, plus the YF was used on the AMC I6s right up till the end of the 232 in '78 or '79.

    I'm located in Reno, NV
    I've rebuilt the orig. YF 2 times in the past 15 yrs (I'm the Jeep's 3rd owner) and the needle/seat that comes in the rebuild kits never fits my carb, the only things of use have been the gaskets and accelerator pump. I'm tired of fooling around with this thing and want to get it back on the road(trails).
    I know the Solex is much less expensive than the Weber, but I know nothing about tuning the Solex and I am guessing that it will arrive at my door with too large jets for my elevation....I live at 4400 ft and play with the Jeep from that point on up to around 8500 ft. Any thoughts about this? It seems almost everyone I talk with knows (or believe they know!) a lot about Holleys and parts are readily available here, but no one I've talk with so far knows anything about the Solex. I just don't want to buy something that I can't get help with if I need it or have tuning problems.

  8. I just put a solex on my CJ5 before the Big Bear Run. Best thing I've done in a long time. Ran great and really improved the fuel economy. I got mine from Krage (http://www.jeepdoc.com) I think it was about $100. Total was $121 including 2 day air shipping to CA.

    Total install time was 20 min.

    $100 is the best price I have heard of,...by far! And your ease of installation report is really encouraging.
    I'll save the web address you gave me and try to order as soon as I return from my m/c trip to the midwest....leaving too soon to order now.

  10. Just FYI, I think at big bear we were definitely above 4000 ft and the Solex worked well without adjustment.

    On both of mine I've had good luck with the Solex versus the Carter. I will say the Solex doesn't like cold weather. Some cold days I've had to let the engine totally warm up before attempting to drive anywhere. I've heard you can get larger jets for them but I haven't checked into it. Seems like on cold days it's just way too lean.
