My oil pump is leaking around the plug located on the bottom of the housing. It looks like a drain plug of some sort. Does anyone know if there is a seal or cork gasket that needs to be on it and if so what do I tell the parts counter guy I need? I tried to explain it to the auto parts guy and I got a deer in the headlights look:?

You mean the plug on the oil filter adapter? IIRC that's the cap for the oil pressure relief valve.

Picture from BullTear of the oil filter adapter:

The cyilindrical part sticking out is where the oil pressure relief valve is located. There's a hex plug in the end of it. The gasket should be available.

Yup thats the one. Thats what I thought it was called, and the parts guy kind of scratched his head. His computer did not show anything but the whole oil pump repair kit, which is about $33.00 and my oil preassure is excellent so I dont want to go there if I dont have to. He told me If I pulled the hex nut off and brought it down to him he could match up a gasket for it. Can I do this? Is there a specific thickness I need? and how many springs and stuff are going to come flying out when I take the nut off?

Mine had an aluminum washer on it. Parts don't really come flying out. There's the aluminum washer, a spring, and a little metal nipple at the end of the spring. On mine, I had to go in after the nipple, it didn't want to come out.

If you go to www.bulltear.com, you can look up the replacement kit for this, just to see what's in there.

Thank you. It looks the same as the oil pump on my old 69 wagoneer with the Buick 350. Probably where AMC got the idea. Big pain in the @ss to deal with when the alluminum wears out.

I'd go with the parts guys advice. Take him the plug and let him match up a gasket. Aluminum or copper should work fine.

i used a pressed fiber washer that was made for oil drain plugs. the best part of this is that since my new adapter (omix) was cast slightly off (the threads are not 100% perpendicular to the sealing surface of the housing.. this washer had enough "squish" to seal it up.
