After jeeping my jeep on the road I have had to shut it down due to a bad timing chain on my 231 even fire. Looking in a chilton's manual it seems vague to me as how to. Basically seems they say remove both pullies, and remove the cover. I seem to see issue's with the HEI distributor. Will I need to remove that first, then remove the cover? I have searched here, and around the net, but only found better pictures of both side's of the cover, but no real info as to removal of the HEI.

Yes, you have to remove the distributor before removing the timing cover as it goes into the timing cover and meshes with the drive gear on the camshaft.

Doesn't matter if it's points or HEI.

I suppose it might be possible not to, but I wouldn't necessarily advise it as you'll still have to re-mesh the gears when reassembling. That and it would just be awkward in my experience.

So when I remove the distributor chiltons states mark the base with the possition of the rotor, then remove. Should I ensure that the motor is on the compression stroke in the #1 cylinder, stop at TDC then mark the possition of the rotor with the base then remove since I will most likely be turning the motor to line up the marks on the timing gears?

    Yup!

Line everything up first at TDC, and then mark your rotor's position and make a mark to align the distributor. Makes it much faster going back together.

I was hoping I was inline with my thinking, just can not wait to be out driving soon. Thank you Sparky
