O.K. I'm finally reaching the point of being able to work on the MB as I have completed the frame swap on Sues YJ. I have to pull the L-head(non-original) for a rebuild.I want to enjoy the MB while rebuilding the L-head so I want to drop in the '61 or '62 F-head my dad has and I have a few questions. First do I need to change the engine plate or can I use a piece of steel for mounting the motor mount. Second, I figure the distributor doesn't know whether it's 6 or 12 volt so I was going to use the F-head dist with the 6 volt MB components. Will the MB starter work with the F-head flywheel?Do I need to swap the L-head flywheel on? I'm trying to locate a Holley 1904 to clear the hood(which is beat up and has a hole cut in the drivers side). Any advice on this is greatly appreciated!!

I have an extra f-head engine plate if you need one. You''ll have to check tooth count on the flywheel as 1. I'm not sure, and 2. Motor is not original anyways. I know there are different tooth counts but not sure where the break is.AFAIK all the Willys flywheels are individually balanced so it may be easier to swap the starter and flywheel over to the f-head. Just be sure and check condition of the bolts as you cant get the bolts off the crank with out pulling the rear main cap.

The bellhousing and starter are definitely different, and I'm almost positive that the flywheel is different as well.

I've never heard of anyone bolting up a T-84 transmission to an F-head, but theoretically it should bolt up.

You do know that the stock F-head carb won't fit under the hood, right?

He mentions the Holley 1904 (which clears the hood?) so I presume he does.

I do know about the carb which is why I am looking for he 1904. I have a couple of similar Holleys but I would need to fabricate a new linkage arm that would clear the F-head. I want to avoid the carb through the hood. The F-head has a flywheel, clutch and bellhousing on it and was mated to a T90(which we also have). It had a 12 volt starter on it.

I got to work on it for a couple of hours today. The starter is of a different design and won't work on the F-head. I did try the F-heads starter with the 6 volt system and it spun but I believe it is a 12 volt starter. I test fit the Holleys I've got and with a spacer and a little work I think one of them will work out. The carb linkage will be a challenge though. Is there a difference between a 6 volt and 12 volt condensor?

Sounds like you have a carb. I think any of the 1900 serries will work the key being the base. I'm about 80 % done putting one on my 3A, (couldn't stand the ugly hood) and the linkage is a challange. Also I seem to run out threads on the mounting studs when I get it shimmed up to clear the manifold. There is a writeup on the 3B page about it and the guy said he had to grind a little on the manifold and throttle arm to get it to fit. I also had a bit of trouble with clearence between my oil filler tube and the valve cover when I set it on.

Thanks Makngtrax, I'll have to check out that article. I can't find the F-head carb linkage but I have an idea of where I can some to modify. It looks like I could get by with a 1/4" spacer if I can find one.
