when I opened up my hood yesterday, I was shocked to see oil spray all over the underside of the hood and fire wall. My voltage regulator, distributer cap and wires also were covered in oil.

I found my problem ...it was my oil filter cover was leaking.
I had recently changed the oil and filter and I guess the gasket for the cover was not properly seated.

Now I have a mess to clean up.
Do you think the oil would have done any damege to the voltage regulator?

I also noticed that the oil filter housing vibrates a hell of a lot when the motor is running and gets worse at higher revs...is this normal?

    thanks

    Fred

Yeh, I had that happen recently ... really have to pay attention to the gasket.
Don't know about the volt reg. It didn't bother my alt after degreasing.
The filter bracket should be rigid, and should only vibrate with the engine as one unit, not independantly.

Yeah, the gasket needs to be seated well. Like Homebrew said, the vibration should match the engine. Check to see if you can wiggle it independently with the engine off. If there's some play you'll need to check the mounting brackets. The V regulator should clean up okay.

Voltage reg (as designed) is waterproof. If the oil got on the under side, it will smoke for a while untill the oil is burned off the resistors under there. They do get quite hot..

    Thanks for the responses.

After looking at a few of the older jeep engine bays , I noticed that the oil filter housing is attached to the engine via 2 brackets (1 bracket at the top and one near the base).

Mine only has one bracket attched to the center of the oil filter which could be the reason why it vibrates a lot.
