axle shaft upgrade

I have a 48 cj2a with a dana 25 front axle that I am rebuilding and upgrading as I go. I have a good used set of Spicer style axles to install in place of the worn out Bendix style shafts. I have also installed the flanged spindle bushings to work with the Spicer shafts. Is there any other upgrade to be made as far as these shafts are concerned? Such as replacing the outer shaft with a 28 spline, better u-joint, etc.

    nickmil In mothballs.

You are pretty much limited to the 10 spline outers. There were a few Wagoneers/Pickups with the closed knuckle 30 that had 27 spline outers that would work with the Spicer 27 inners but these are extremely hard to find and really no stronger for your application. The 10 spline outers will work just fine in a Dana 25/27. You might want to consider the knuckle stud conversion if you haven't already done it. Do a search and you'll find tons of info on that. I would say keep the old axles for spares, but I've had my trail spares for over four years, you can only haul so many spares in the jeep.

    :iagree:

I've never seen an axle fail on the outer end, it's usually either just outside of the differential or at the u-joint/Benix joint where the carnage occurs.

The Bendix-type axles are a good swap IMHO.

    Thanks for the input.
I have already installed studs for the spindles and king pins.
When converting to Spicer style shafts from Bendix style, do you also remove the thrust washer/bearing from the end of the axle tube. I noticed the axle I got some of my parts from has Spicer style shafts and no thrust washer.
