Thinking of swaping the broken D 27 for a wide track D 30. How much wider is the W/T D 30?

Way to wide, like 10" or so. A NT dana 30 is 2.5" wider than the stock dana 25/27 and works fine. The wide track will look goofy without putting the rear in also, that would also cause a transfercase change.

Are there N/T 30's with open knuckles? I was hoping to get a little tighter turning.

Matt, from 1972 through 1981, all CJ front axles were NT D30s with open knuckles. A pretty easy swap into an ECJ5.
It definitely tightens up the turning radius. As Sparky said, much more can be found on this common swap by doing a search and reading the postings in our tech library.

The 30 used in a Wagoneer in 71-73 is closed knuckle. As Lynn points out, all CJ front 30s and 72-73 Commando front 30s are open knuckle.

Gentelmen, I thank you for info, it is most appreciated. The hunt is on for a N/T 30.

    I am using a W/T 30 from a 82 CJ7, 56"s.
    3 inch wider per side.
It looks pretty good as is, but will be using the 2 inch spacer's in back.
This will fill in the flares you can see in my avatar.

I also had a N/T d 30 that was 51"s wide but sold it in favor of the CJ7 W/T.

note this is not the same width as a w/t 44 from a FSJ
