I had problems with the original gauge cluster. Replaced it twice then made my CJ-5 a gauge plate like a M38A1. That was several years ago. Now the fuel gauge is swinging from full to mt as we go down the road even with a full tank. I have checked the terminals and they are tight. The sending unit is 44 years old and is my guess for the problem. Any one have any other ideas?

Do you have a seperate ground wire running from the tank to frame? Sometimes those tanks will build up rust etc and insulate themselves from a good ground, and bouncing down the road can cause this needle fluctuation. Since its happening on full tank, that would nearly rule out sender.

I'd guess a wireing issue. As walt said, check the grounds.............
