A friend of mine is swapping a 4.0 from an '89 Cherokee into an '87 CJ7. In the process he said he installed the CJ WP onto the 4.0. It ran backwards but he said it bolted on. Is ther a 4.0 WP that runs the right direction for a non serpetine 258? I read somewhere the 2000 Cherokee had a high volume WP that would be for us desert guys. My cooling system is fine but I'm always looking out for possible upgrades.

A buddy of mine swapped a '94 ZJ 4.0 into his CJ7. I don't recall if he used the CJ water pump, or just the fan... but when the engine ran, it blew hot air from the engine compartment outward through the radiator :D

To resolve the issue he ordered a special fan with blades designed to match the engine rotation and pull air into the engine bay through the rad.

I think your buddy needs to be careful about running the WP in the opposite direction than stock for the '89 engine... it won't cool effectively, thermostat won't open, etc.
Go with the original Cherokee WP, and get the fan with the reversed blades.
    (or go electric)

serpentine = reverse rotation water pump and fan blades
v-belt = standard rotation pump and fan blades
if you change, you have to change both
you simply ask for non-serpentine water pump
intially, serepentine was first used on Calif models only, another way to check.
if I recall, the word "reverse" is stamped into the water pump housing as well
although I have seen pumps that weren't reverse with the word cast into the body.
