I am getting things wrapped up on my 80 CJ-5 project 5.0 in hopes of having it registered and on the trails soon. In redoing the dash/instrument panel I opted for a 3-way toggle for the wipers. How many speeds is the factory wiper motor? The switch I have now is 2 on's ( 1 up and 1 down)and one off (center position). I thought I had it wired correctly, green low speed, red high speed and black ground,,but it blows fuses as soon as I turn it on. Im not an electrical genius but I thought I had it but obviously I dont.

    Any suggestions or advice?

My '77 manual only shows green (low speed), red (high speed), black (park switch) and ground - no blue.

I would like to resurrect wiper motor for my 78 CJ5. I lost the damn brush springs and the 2 long small bolts that hold the motor to the gear box during the 10 years that it was sitting in a box. Once I get parts for that I'll have to figure out the wiring on mine too. One thing I don't know is is where the switch for the washer fluid is. I can't remember if that ever worked when I bought the jeep before I restored it.

I think the 4-wire units are for intermittant wipers.

I have tried running the "park" wire in several ways with this switch but it still does not return to the neutral position when switched off, so I guess I'll do it the old fashioned way,,,hit the off switch when wipers are almost at the bottom of their travel arc.

Two thoughts - first, with an extra wire, maybe this windshield is a later model than you think? I'd expect intermittent wipers to appear in later years, ratehr than in '76 and then not in '77 (per my manual).

Have you taken the wiper motor apart to see which wire goes to the park switch? It's a micro switch that is in parallel with the dash switch, so that both must be open for the motor to stop, but either can make it run.

VIN Matches that it is an '80. The motor and wiring match the original dead one I removed (3-wire). The factory switch was missing, hence my using the toggle switch. As it is primarily a trail/camping/hunting Jeep (once this swap is finally at the point I can get it registered) I'm not that concerned about it right now. Just something that has been making me wonder about how to wire it up,,,but at least it is working good enough to get it street legal soon.:driving:
