Lets say a feller has lock rites in the front and back, lets say it snows and you need to drive to work. Would it be safe to drive on the snow covered highway, NOT INTERSTATE, at the slower, locked in, 4x4 speed? (you know 40 or less etc etc) With all four wheels pulling try to make you go straight? Would it hurt to drive with one front hub unlocked or will it tear up something? Just curious is all.:?

IMHO I would not drive a locker-equipped CJ5 in the snow more than around town.

I've driven and plowed with a CJ5 with PowrLoks front and rear and it made for scary driving. In 2WD it would get sideways the *minute* the rear tires broke loose. In 4WD it just wanted to crab walk and forget steering if wheels are spinning.

You can also do a search as this topic has come up in the past.

X2 compounding the lockers with snow is a recipe for failure

Ah, I drove last winter with 33" Baja claws for about 9 miles each way on paved roads - but with an open rear differential and a welded front - I only locked in the drivers side front hub and was VERY gentle with it. Kinda spooky, but didn't damage anything....Not recommended for any speed over 30 MPH....

I "thought" my experience was about the same as old posts that I had searched: I only have experience with factory posi, not real lockers, and given that driving in a California chain control area is limited to 35 mph, I have found posi to be awesome in SNOW. But posi sucks in solid ice and is questionable in hard packed snow when steering.
I find posi in mud/gumbo to be very unpredictable too.

Good point - I should qualify. Driving in deep snow is different - I meant more snow covered roads. Or worse - patches of snow/ice with patches of dry. I've known a small number of Jeep guys who've rolled in the winter - one icy patch to get you sideways then a dry spot and over you go.

Not recommended which is one of the reasons I have OX lockers front and rear. Open when I want, Locked when I want.

I don't know anything about DEEP snow ... just plain snow, as compared to ice or hard packed snow (which has a bit more tractive help than solid ice). Regardless, slow speed is key. I find popping the throttle slightly will help in tight turns when the posi wants to point you up hill. I know a lot of guys that have wrecked good machinery for no good reason too.
A selective locker is ALWAYS the best choice
